Poupalos Markelos

Markelos Poupalos was born in 1973 in the city of Chios. He is a professional musician and plays the lute, the oud and sings. He began learning various instruments at a young age and was self-taught. At the age of 20 he attended lute seminars at the Homerion Cultural Centre for 3 months and learned the basics of the instrument, which he developed through personal study and watching older performers. He began playing as an amateur with his brother, who played the violin, and gradually they formed a professional band. He gives music lessons and has worked with P. Thalassinos in Athens. It works at shops, festivals, weddings and celebrations, and his repertoire mainly includes traditional, entekhno and folk music.
